Some simple and basic marks

  • They are also on the market in different colors
  • They can have a rigid point or a brush tip

Fine line ink pen

There are so many different brands out there. I personally like the Uni pin fine liner a lot since I draw on paper but also on paint sometimes. I needed a pen that is resistant, a bit of an all-rounder. I have them in all different sizes. (They start at about 2$ a pen)

If you have to make a limited choice I would recommend you to buy the following:

A 0.1mm a 0.5mm and one ink pen with a brush tip for filling in bigger areas is already a fantastic start!
It will allow you to variate, depending on the size of your drawing. (But even with one simple pen you can already have a lot of fun!)

Let’s just collect some very simple stokes.. (we will get fancier later) You can play around with the following characteristics.

  • Density
  • Stroke length
  • Cross hatching
  • Thickness of the pen

Practice suggestions:

Choose objects that you see every day but you probably do not pay attention to. Draw the outlines and add simple marks to them. You will see how interesting they become!

An absolute master in ink drawing is Alphonso Dunn. I have both his books and can highly recommend them.
